Umai Serawak

Umai (Umei), This is a dish for the brave. The umai is traditionally a standard lunch meal for the Melanau fisherman.  Thin slivers of raw fresh fish, usually iced but not frozen, combined with thinly sliced onions, chili, salt and juice from sour fruits like lime or assam go into preparing this dish.  The dish is usually accompanied by a bowl of toasted sago pearls and is so simple that fishermen prepare it easily on their boats.

Manok Pansuh

The Iban dish of Manok Pansoh (ayam Pansuh) in bamboo is a must try.  Cut chicken pieces, mushrooms, lemongrass and tapioca leaves are stuffed into bamboos and cooked over an open fire.  This seals in the flavour and the result is succulent and juicy tender chicken, with gravy hinting of lemongrass and bamboo.

Ambuyat (Brunei traditional food)

Ambuyat, made from a mixture of sago and hot water, it has the appearance and texture of starch. However, the fun part about eating ambuyat would be using a unique wooden tool called a “candas”, that you use to scoop and twirl it into a small ball that is dipped into a sauce called “cacah”, a thick and spicy sauce before eating it. Ambuyat is also served with an assortment of side dishes, like pais, which is meat wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over direct fire. Other dishes include lalap – deep fried seasoned meat and tahai, a type of soup made from dried fish.

Nasi Kuning

Nasi kuning is also one of many favourite food in Sabah. Nasi kuning have many version such as Nasi Tumpeng (Indonesia), Nasi Kuning Johor, Nasi Kuning Terengganu and many more. This Nasi Kuning is called Nasi Kuning Sabah. Usually served with a boiled egg, cucumber, ayam sambal or sambal ikan tongkol (Tuna Fish) or Sambal ikan bilis. Specially from Sabah.

Rawon Soup (Indonesian Beef Black Soup)

Rawon is a special dish which originated from East Java Province but now has become a well known dish across the Indonesia. What makes this dish so special & unique is it’s black color. Rawon is one of traditional indonesian food, consists of special spicy beef soup because of containing keluwek (fruits of kepayang tree used as a spice).

Sarawak Laksa


The Sarawak Laksa is essentially vermicelli rice noodles (bee hoon), cooked in a shrimp-based broth that is made to thicken with coconut milk.  This dish is served with generous amounts of crunchy bean sprouts, a few boiled prawns and garnished with shredded chicken and egg omelette.  For added spice, there's the thick sambal paste that is usually served on the side. In addition, you can also squeeze some lime juice (limau kasturi) into your dish as well.
